How to Choose the Best Shopify SEO Service (and What It Costs)

Shopify · Choosing a provider
The hard part of buying Shopify SEO is not finding a provider. It is telling a real one from a reseller, and knowing what a fair price looks like. Here is what to check, what to ask, what to refuse, and what the work should cost.

What to check before you hire anyone

Shopify SEO is not one service. Two providers can quote the same number for very different work. Judge the provider on five things before you judge the price.

Who does the work

Ask who opens your store and makes the changes. If the answer is a salesperson, a partner or a queue you cannot see, the quote is for a reseller, not an operator.

Named pages

Ask which pages they will change. A provider who names your collections and templates has a scope. A provider who lists generic services has a brochure.

What is excluded

The boundary matters more than the promise. If nothing is excluded, nothing is defined, and the project can expand without limit.

Access plan

They should tell you exactly what access they need, what they will do with it and when they will hand it back.

A fixed end point

Ask what “done” looks like and when you can walk away. Work without an end point is a retainer in disguise.

What was left out

A good provider records what they did not fix. That boundary is what makes the next decision clear.

What a Shopify SEO service should cost

Prices vary with catalogue size, market and access. These bands are what a small or mid-sized store should expect to see, and what each route actually buys.

RouteTypical priceWhat it buys
App onlyNothing to about $30/monthAutomated on-page tweaks. No diagnosis, no judgement about which pages matter.
Freelance hoursAbout $40 to $150/hourUnbounded work. The total depends on how the project is run, not on your budget.
Fixed-scope repair$249 one-offNamed templates on your store fixed and recorded. No retainer, no renewal.
Agency retainerAbout $1,500 to $5,000+/monthAn ongoing programme with content, links and reporting. Usually a minimum term.
Enterprise$10,000+/monthMulti-store, multi-market programmes with dedicated teams.

The gap between a $249 repair and a $1,500 retainer is not quality. It is scope. Most small stores do not need an open-ended programme to fix four templates.

Questions to ask any provider — and our answers

Send these to every provider you are shortlisting, including us. The answers tell you more than the homepage.

Ask

  • Which pages will you change, and which will you leave alone?
  • How long will it take, and from when?
  • What access do you need?
  • Is this a one-off or a retainer?
  • What is not included?
  • Do you guarantee rankings?

Our answer

  • Up to four priority templates, chosen by evidence. Everything else is recorded, not touched.
  • Five business days from collaborator access.
  • Themes, products, collections and navigation permissions, plus read access to your analytics if you want tag checks.
  • One-off. No subscription and no renewal.
  • Theme development, new copy, apps and paid media.
  • No. Nobody honest does.

Red flags

  • Guaranteed rankings. No provider controls Google’s results. A guarantee is a sales tactic, not a plan.
  • A price with no scope. If the quoted price is not attached to named pages, you are buying an estimate.
  • No access plan. Vague talk about “optimising your store” with no named permissions is how accounts are lost.
  • A retainer with no exit. If there is no point at which the work is finished, it never finishes.
  • Reports with no decisions. Dashboards are not deliverables. Decisions about named pages are.

How to decide

Do it yourself

Right if the fixes are simple and you have admin access and time. Titles, descriptions, headings and internal links are within reach. Structured data and templates usually are not.

Buy the fixed repair

Right if you can name the pages that matter and want them fixed by someone else, with a clear end point. This is the $249 route, and it is the one we sell.

Hire a retainer

Right if you need content, links and ongoing work across a large or fast-changing catalogue. It costs more because the scope is bigger, not because the work is better.

Choose the fixed-scope repair

Up to four priority templates, fixed and recorded, for $249. Five business days from access. No retainer.

Choosing a Shopify SEO provider: questions

Is a Shopify SEO service worth it for a small store?

It can be, when the scope is bounded and the pages are named. A small store usually needs a specific set of things fixed on the pages that already have some demand, not an open-ended programme. If a provider cannot tell you which pages they will change and what they will leave alone, the scope is not ready to buy.

How much should Shopify SEO cost?

Apps run from nothing to about thirty dollars a month and only automate on-page tweaks. Freelance hours usually run forty to one hundred and fifty dollars an hour with no fixed ceiling. A fixed-scope repair is a one-off fee for named pages. Agency retainers commonly start around fifteen hundred dollars a month and rise with catalogue size, markets and reporting depth. Quotes vary with access, market and catalogue.

Can I do Shopify SEO myself?

Some of it, yes. Titles, descriptions, headings and internal links are editable from the Shopify admin. Structured data, redirect maps and template changes usually need theme access or a developer. The honest test is whether the work is bounded and you know which pages come first.

What if my theme needs development work?

That is a separate scope. A repair can fix what is editable through the admin and the sections that do not need theme development. Anything requiring code changes should be quoted and scheduled separately, and should not delay the work that can be done now.

Do you guarantee page one?

No. Rankings depend on competition, demand and off-page authority. What a repair can do is fix what is technically and editorially wrong on the pages in scope, and record what was changed, what was left out and what still needs work.
