Technical SEO audit

A technical SEO audit finds and fixes the infrastructure problems that stop everything else working: pages Google cannot crawl or index, canonical conflicts, redirect chains, index bloat, and Core Web Vitals failures.

What is a technical SEO audit?

A technical SEO audit evaluates how search engines discover, render, index and trust your site – separate from content quality. If Google cannot reach or store your pages, no amount of content or link building will help.

That is why technical SEO comes first in the SEO audit order.

Technical SEO audit checklist

Five groups, in fix order.

Crawling & indexing

Access

  • robots.txt allows important pages and does not block CSS or JS.
  • XML sitemap is valid, complete and listed in robots.txt.
  • No accidental noindex or X-Robots-Tag blocks.
  • One self-referencing canonical per page; no loops.
  • No orphan pages; correct HTTP status codes; no redirect chains.
Rendering

What Google sees

  • Key content is server-rendered or reliably crawlable.
  • Rendered DOM matches what users see.
Architecture & links

Structure

  • Important pages within three clicks of the homepage.
  • Breadcrumb navigation with BreadcrumbList schema.
  • Pagination and faceted navigation do not create crawl traps.
Core Web Vitals

Speed

  • LCP under 2.5s, INP under 200ms, CLS under 0.1 (75th percentile).
  • Next-gen images, correct sizing, no render-blocking assets.
  • CDN and caching enabled; TTFB under 800ms.
Schema & security

Trust

  • Relevant schema (Organization, Article, FAQ, Breadcrumb) validated.
  • HTTPS sitewide; no mixed content.

Technical SEO audit tools

Google Search Console (indexing, Core Web Vitals) and the free website audit tool cover most checks. A crawler (Screaming Frog, Sitebulb) helps on larger sites.

How to run a technical SEO audit

Fix in the order that avoids wasted work.

Baseline

Run the free audit and PageSpeed on your priority templates.

Separate blockers

Distinguish what blocks indexing from what only slows the page.

Fix in order

Crawl access to indexing to architecture to speed to schema.

Re-test

Check the rendered page and crawl paths after each change.

Hand off

Give developers precise notes for anything that needs code.

Technical SEO services

If the crawl, index or speed problems are systemic, GSA’s Rebuild fixes them and verifies the rendered result – site speed, Core Web Vitals, index bloat and canonical loops – from $1,999.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a technical SEO audit cost?
Technical-only audits run roughly $500-$5,000 from consultants and agencies, more with log-file analysis. Our free tool covers the most common checks at no cost.
Can I fix technical SEO myself?
Many items yes; some need a developer or hosting access. The audit tells you which is which.
How often should I run a technical audit?
Quarterly, and always after a redesign, migration or CMS change.

What the technical SEO audit covers

A technical SEO audit is a bounded inspection of what search engines can crawl, render and index. It is not a content rewrite and it is not a ranking promise.

  • Crawl and indexation: robots.txt, noindex, canonical tags, sitemap inclusion and orphan pages.
  • Page response: status codes, redirect chains, broken internal links, HTTPS and mixed content.
  • Rendering: title, H1, structured data, JavaScript dependencies and mobile viewport.
  • Architecture: internal link depth, duplicate URLs, parameter handling and pagination.

Who it is for

Business owners who have published pages but cannot explain why some are not indexed, why a page returns the wrong canonical, or why the same content appears under several URLs. It is also useful before a migration or a redesign.

What you get

A dated list of findings with the URL, the evidence and the fix. Every item is marked as an error, a warning or a deliberate exception. You also get a re-check date and the scope that was crawled.

What it does not promise

It does not guarantee rankings, traffic or revenue. It does not replace a content strategy, and it does not “fix” a page by adding keywords. The audit tells you what is technically wrong; the business decision remains yours.
