Local Search Statistics 2026: The State of US Trade Websites

We audited 372 websites of US electricians, roofers, HVAC firms, dentists, med spas and childcare providers. These are the technical and local-search problems quietly costing them calls.

What we found: the technical problems

Slow server response16.4%
No H1 heading15.6%
No structured data (schema)15.3%
No meta description12.9%
No canonical tag12.4%
No mobile viewport6.2%
Invisible in Google (noindex)5.9%

Share of the 372 audited sites with each issue, from a single-page technical audit. noindex = the site tells Google not to list it.

Page speed & SEO scores: how the sites actually perform

Technical issues are only half the story. We also ran every site through Google PageSpeed Insights and scored it on our own SEO engine. The results are sobering:

75median mobile PageSpeed (out of 100)
6.3%scored under 50/100 on mobile speed
65median SEO score (out of 100)

A slow, low-scoring site loses visitors before they convert, and Google ranks it lower on mobile — where most “near me” searches happen. A median PageSpeed of 75 across 189 measured sites is a competitive opening for anyone who fixes it.

Local search ranking factors 2026: what the data shows

Google’s local algorithm weighs three things — relevance, distance and prominence. Two of the three you can control. Across the 372 sites we audited, the biggest controllable gap was prominence:

  • Relevance — a complete Google Business Profile plus on-page signals. 15.3% of the sites had no structured data to help Google understand them.
  • Distance — you can’t change where you are, but service-area and location pages extend your reach across the suburbs you serve.
  • Prominence — reviews, citations and links. 21% of audited businesses had fewer than 50 Google reviews — well below the bar in every trade.

Framework: Google’s stated local ranking factors (relevance, distance, prominence). Figures from our 372-site audit.

The Map Pack gap: median Google reviews by trade

The Map Pack shows only the top 3 businesses. This is the median review count in each trade — the bar a business has to clear to compete.

dentists19750

med-spas18272
roofers132145
electricians146109
childcare1926

21% of all audited businesses have fewer than 50 reviews — well below the median in every trade. Reviews are the single strongest local ranking signal you can control.

The action plan: what to fix, in order

If you run a local trade business, this is the sequence that moves the needle fastest — highest impact first:

  1. Fix indexability first. Confirm your pages aren’t blocked (noindex) and that your XML sitemap is submitted in Google Search Console. A blocked site cannot rank at all.
  2. Claim and complete your Google Business Profile. Correct categories, services, service areas, hours, photos and a booking link. This is what powers the Map Pack.
  3. Build review velocity. Ask every happy customer for a review, every job. Aim to pass your local top-3 competitor — not a national average.
  4. Fix speed and mobile. Compress images, enable caching, cut unused JavaScript and CSS. Target 90+ on mobile PageSpeed.
  5. Add structured data. LocalBusiness, Service and FAQ schema — it earns rich results and helps AI answer engines cite you.
  6. Fix on-page basics. One clear title and H1 per page, a written meta description, and internal links to the services you want to sell.
  7. Publish location and service pages for the areas you actually serve — genuinely distinct, not city-name clones.
  8. Build citations and local links. Consistent NAP across directories, plus local press and trade associations. Authority is the long game.

Most of steps 1–6 are quick, technical fixes. Steps 7–8 are the ongoing work that compounds.

Frequently asked questions

What percentage of local businesses have SEO problems?

In our audit of 372 US trade websites, 5.9% were blocked from Google by a noindex tag, 6.3% scored under 50/100 on mobile PageSpeed, and 21% had fewer than 50 Google reviews.

How many Google reviews do you need to rank in the Map Pack?

It depends on your trade and city. The median across the 372 sites we audited was 149 reviews, but in competitive trades like dentistry and HVAC the median is well over 600. You need to beat your local top 3, not a national number.

What is the single biggest local SEO problem?

Indexability. A site that sends Google a noindex signal cannot rank at all, no matter how good its content is. It is also usually the fastest fix.

How long does local SEO take to work?

Local pages typically take 60–120 days to rank. Map Pack movement usually appears in 30–90 days once the Google Business Profile, reviews, citations and location pages are in place.

How much does local SEO cost?

GSA Growth starts with a $99 Local Leak Audit, then $499/month for the Starter plan and $999+/month for Growth. See our local SEO services for details.

Method

We ran a technical and on-page audit across a sample of 372 US local-service websites (electricians, roofers, HVAC, dentists, med spas, childcare) using our own audit engine: indexability, metadata, headings, structured data, canonical tags, mobile readiness and server response. Review counts are from Google Business Profile data at the time of the audit. Figures are point-in-time observations, not guarantees.
