Review Velocity Calculator

See how many genuine review requests your business needs each month to close the gap with the local top three.

How quickly can you close your review gap?

Use your actual numbers. If you do not know the local top-three average, run the free local visibility audit first.

Advanced request planning (optional)

Use these fields to translate the review target into a customer-request target. A completed job means a finished service, appointment or transaction with a genuine customer relationship — not a lead, quote or cancellation.

What the number means

Review velocity is not a ranking guarantee. Google Maps visibility also depends on relevance, distance, rating, profile completeness, website quality and local prominence. The safest system asks every eligible customer for honest feedback — never only happy customers.

Read the Google Maps SEO guide or learn about local citations.

How we calculate it

The calculation is deliberately transparent:

  1. Review gap = local top-three average minus your current reviews, never below zero.
  2. Monthly target = review gap divided by your target months, rounded up.
  3. Requests needed = monthly target divided by your expected review response rate.
  4. Ask rate = requests needed divided by completed jobs.

The top-three average is your input or the value prefilled from the report. The response rate is an assumption you control and should replace with your own historical data when available. This is an operating target, not a ranking or revenue guarantee.

Why review velocity affects visibility and sales

Reviews do two jobs. They help Google understand prominence and relevance, and they help a customer decide whether to call. Recency matters: a strong historic total does not help as much if the profile has gone quiet for months.

97%of consumers read local-business reviews
74%weigh reviews from the last three months
88%prefer businesses that reply to reviews

How to build a compliant review system

  1. Ask every eligible customer after the job is complete.
  2. Make the request easy with a direct Google review link.
  3. Use a short, human message while the experience is fresh.
  4. Reply to every review, including negative feedback, professionally.
  5. Track asks, responses, rating, recency and service type monthly.

Never buy reviews, gate reviews, or offer a benefit only for a positive review. Honest volume and recency beat a sudden artificial spike.

What the 90-day plan looks like

Month 1: fix the profile, choose the review link and ask after every completed job. Month 2: identify which services and teams produce the best response rate. Month 3: compare your review gap, rating, recent-review count, Map Pack position and calls against the local top three.

The calculator gives you the operating target. Your Google listing, service pages and local prominence still determine whether those reviews turn into visibility and enquiries.

External case studies in our evidence bank show review velocity working alongside GBP optimisation, service-area pages and citations; we label those as industry examples, not GSA client results.

Frequently asked questions

What is review velocity?

Review velocity is the pace at which a business earns genuine new customer reviews. Recency and a steady flow matter alongside total review count, rating and relevance.

How many reviews do I need to rank in the Map Pack?

There is no universal number. Compare your review count and rating with the actual top three businesses for your service and area.

Can I offer customers an incentive for a review?

Do not buy reviews, gate reviews or condition a benefit on a positive review. Ask all genuine customers for honest feedback and follow the platform rules.

What if my business has too few completed jobs?

The calculator will show the realistic pace. Improve the ask rate, make the request easy and focus on a consistent monthly process rather than a one-time campaign.
