Local SEO Keyword Research: The Complete 2026 Guide

Local keyword research is how you find the exact words your neighbours type into Google when they need what you sell — and build the pages that win those searches. Here is the full process, from a blank sheet to a mapped content plan.

What is local SEO keyword research?

It is finding the words and phrases people near you type into Google when they need what you sell, then building pages that answer them. It differs from general keyword research in one crucial way: local intent.

Someone searching “electrician” might be anywhere. Someone searching “emergency electrician Denver” or “electrician near me” is ready to call, and Google answers them with the Map Pack and local results. Those are the searches that produce jobs — and they are what you optimise for.

How to do local keyword research: the process

  1. List the services you sell — in the customer’s words, not industry jargon. “Panel upgrade”, not “electrical distribution board remediation”.
  2. Add local modifiers — city, suburb and “near me”. “Roof repair Leeds“, “plumber near me“, “emergency locksmith Brooklyn“.
  3. Add intent modifiers — “emergency”, “cheap”, “best”, “cost”, “same day”, “24 hour”. These signal what the searcher wants and how ready they are.
  4. Validate with keyword tools — check volume and difficulty so you build pages that can actually rank.
  5. Mine your own Search Console — queries you already appear for but rank on page two or three. Those are the fastest wins you will ever find.
  6. Map each keyword to a page — one primary term per page, plus close variants.
  7. Prioritise — by volume × commercial intent × how winnable it is.

The most underrated source is your own Search Console. It shows the exact queries Google already associates you with — no guessing.

How to map keywords to pages

One page, one primary keyword. Then group close variants onto it.

Page typeTargetExample
HomepageBrand + main service + city“electrician denver”
Service pageOne service, no city“panel upgrade”
Location pageService + city/suburb“electrician aurora”
City × serviceService + city (high intent)“emergency electrician denver”

Do not build a page for every city unless there is real demand and something genuinely useful to say — thin city clones get crawled and not indexed.

How to prioritise

Score each keyword on three things and do the highest-scoring first:

  • Volume — how many people search it each month.
  • Commercial intent — “emergency electrician” beats “what is a fuse box”.
  • Winnability — how weak your local competition is. A high-volume term you cannot rank for is worthless.

The best first targets are usually medium-volume, high-intent, low-difficulty local terms — the ones your competitors have not bothered with.

Local keyword examples

Start with the core service plus a market modifier, an urgent need, or a nearby area. Useful patterns include service plus market, service plus near me, and service plus problem. Validate the wording and demand before building a page.

Frequently asked questions

What is local SEO keyword research?

It is finding the words and phrases people near you type into Google when they need what you sell — then building pages that answer them. It differs from general keyword research because local intent (“near me”, city and suburb names, “emergency”) drives the searches that turn into calls.

How do I find local keywords?

Start with the services you sell and add location modifiers (city, suburb, “near me”). Then validate with Google Keyword Planner, Semrush or Ahrefs, and mine your own Google Search Console for queries you already appear for but do not rank on.

How many keywords should one page target?

One primary keyword and 3–8 closely related variants per page. Trying to rank one page for “electrician”, “plumber” and “roofer” at once ranks it for none of them.

Do I need a page for every city?

Only where you have real demand and something genuinely useful to say. Thin, near-identical city pages get crawled and not indexed — Google ignores them. Build fewer, better pages.

How much does local keyword research cost?

You can do the basics free with Google Keyword Planner and Search Console. GSA Growth includes full local keyword research and page mapping in our local SEO programme from $499/month, or a $99 Local Leak Audit for a prioritised list.
